FAQs

What can I expect in a counselling session?

A session lasts for 50 minutes. Therapy is open ended for as long as you need it.  Six, weekly sessions would be recommended to start with, followed by a review.  Some people are happy to stop here, others wish to explore themselves and their diffficulties for longer and so require longer term counselling.  Between sessions, clients are encouraged to think about and process what was discussed. You should be happy with your counsellor and feel safe and comfortable to talk openly about whatever issues you wish to bring to gain the most benefit.

As a client you will have the opportunity to explore your feelings in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment.  In our first session, I will explain the way in which we will work together and we will agree some boundaries for our relationship.  After this, you will lead the direction and pace of counselling.

What benefits can I expect from working with a counsellor?

Often it is helpful just to know that someone understands. Counselling can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or point you in the direction of a solution.  Working with a counsellor can enable you to unpick the difficult feelings you may be experiencing and help you to understand youself better. After counselling, clients often feel a burden has been lifted and that they feel emmotionally stronger.

The benefits you obtain from counselling are enhanced by a good relationship with your counsellor.  If you feel safe, trust your counsellor and do not feel judged, you will better placed to explore your problems.
